Bacterial contamination of four commonly used dental materials Dr. M. Ghavam* - Dr. M. Aligholi** *- Associate Professor of Operative Dentistry Dept. - Faculty of Dentistry – Tehran University of Medical Sciences. **- The member of Microbiology Dept. Faculty of Medicine – Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Background and Aim: Bacterial contamination of dental materials and devices used in dental clinics and laboratories can lead to infectious diseases in patients, dentists and dental care providers. The aim of this study was to examine bacterial contamination of four dental materials. Materials and Methods: In this analytic-descriptive study, flour of pumice, zinc oxide powder, prophylaxis paste and wooden wedges of available commercial brands were tested. To assure an examiner-blind study, the samples were coded in the microbiology laboratory. In sterile conditions, the samples were inoculated in tryptycase soy broth and sodium tioglycolate for aerobic and anaerobic bacterial growth, respectively. The media was then incubated in 35 degrees centigrade and checked daily. Results: Flour of pumice showed contamination to coagulase-negative staphylococci, enterococcus faecallis, bacillus and diphteroid. Some of the prophylaxis pastes were contaminated with micrococcus roseous, coagulase-negative staphylococci and diphteroid. One brand of wooden wedges demonstrated contamination to staphylococcus, diphteroid and bacilli. Zinc oxide powders were not contaminated. None of the samples showed contamination to anaerobic bacteria. Conclusion: Some of the investigated materials showed bacterial contamination, but the identified bacteria are not pathogen in normal situations. Key words: Bacterial contamination - Flour of pumice - Zinc oxide - Prophylaxis paste - Wooden wedge

Commonly used topical oral wound dressing materials in dental and surgical practice--a literature review.
A small number of medicaments are used in oral and maxillofacial surgery to dress wounds, relieve pain, prevent infection and promote healing. While these materials are routinely used, their constituents, uses and effects on oral tissues are rarely discussed. This literature review provides an overview of the constituents, uses and effects of the common materials--oxidised regenerated cellulose...
متن کاملBacterial contamination of dental unit waterlines
Safety of patients and dental personnel requires the appropriate microbiological water quality in dental units. During treatment, patients and dental workers are exposed both to direct contact with bacteria-contaminated water in the form of splatter and with contaminated water aerosol emitted during work by unit handpieces, including rotating and ultrasonic instruments. The aim of the study was...
متن کاملA comparative study on the accuracies exhibited by four commonly used interocclusal registration materials
Interocclusal records are an everyday necessity in routine prosthodontic practice. A number of materials have been advocated by several groups of workers over a length of time to be suitable for the purpose. In the present study, the accuracies exhibited by four commonly used interocclusal recording materials were compared when they were subjected to both the clinical and laboratory phases of j...

متن کاملWet-Weather Pollution from Commonly-Used Building Materials
Development in sensitive watersheds continues to pose environmental problems for receiving waters. One contributor to the long-term pollution of sensitive waterways is building and construction materials. However, the long-term effect of many building materials on the environment has not been quantified. Prior testing of these materials in the laboratory has indicated that the potential for rel...
